JAPAN 2025 – Jan 8th (Ueno, Tokyo St)
Another early start, with another solo photo walk. Same camera setup as the day before, but ventured towards Ueno park this morning (please click an image below to enlarge).
Back to the hotel, get ready, and head out for today’s adventures. Today is over to Kanda for the annual visit to Tobichi so MBW can stock up on the years Hobonichi selection, with an added bonus of a stop at Glitch Coffee. Last time we were in Kanda to visit Tobichi, we found a charming little coffee shop, where the super nice old man chattered away happily while fixing us a cup of (pretty sure it was) instant coffee. When we got home and found that literally one street away was one of the most highly regarded coffee spots in Tokyo, we knew we had to go back.
Glitch Coffee was…. interesting! MBW ordered a latte flavoured with cinnamon, cardamon, and raisin, with a smooth and balanced profile, and thought it was the nicest coffee she’d ever had. I ordered a black coffee with flavours of pomegranate, cranberry, and bubblegum, with a juicy, sweet finish. I thought it was a pretty cool drink, and quite the experience, but couldn’t detect anything that said “coffee” to me. I would rate it an 8.5/10 as a drink, a 0/10 as a coffee. Perhaps it just reveals the limitations of my palette!
Lunch was something MBW had been craving, a Kirin Beer City and their garlic butter prawns. I had a mixed sausage platter, which wasn’t bad, but not something I was particularly hanging out for. The Kirin Ichiban was pretty great though!
Finally, the rest of the day was spent doing something we always plan to do on these trips, but always end up cutting for time – exploring the area around Tokyo Station.
This already iconic building and shooting location also had the privilege of hosting some sort of fashion shoot for a bridal wear company, resulting in dozens of tableaus where different models were showing off their collection. Made for some fun sneaking some BTS-style shots on the discrete Lumix S9 setup I was rocking!
Finished out the day back at the hotel after a delightful yakiniku dinner. Yakiniku seriously is an unbeatable way of eating in the cold winter months!
